The “Magic Mix” To Making A Great First Impression On Your Blog

We’ve all been there before, surfin’ the Internet for this or that and before you know it… an hour has passed. Oops!

But while you were checking out all of these websites, what kept you on certain sites longer than others? What gave them that attention grabbing stickiness?

I have visited TONS of blogs throughout my blogging career, and I have noticed 2 VERY important qualities that give a blog a great first impression… I call it the “magic mix”. After all, the goal of any blogger is to keep people on their site long enough to enjoy multiple pieces of content and interact on the blog.

Enjoy today’s video as I share with you my “magic mix”.

Well, what did you think?

This potent combination of professionalism and personality are the difference between me hanging out on a blog, and hittin’ the road. What about you?

I would love to hear your thoughts on what it takes to create a great first impression on a blog. Please leave me a comment below and I look forward to seeing what you have to say.

Yours In Blogging Mastery,

P.S. If you enjoyed this post, please share it with your friends on Facebook, Twitter, and any other social site you wish. :)

Sorry but I have no idea what makes a good first impression with a blog. Being a guy, an attractive sexy woman makes a good first impression. Once I saw this video of a woman with a blog and loved it. She reminded me of of Katie Freiling but she was videotaping her personal moments like getting married and having a baby. I tried to find it but could not.

I know that you have a great blog because Google is the smartest company on the internet and numbers do not lie. Your blog has a Google page rank (PR) of 4. Jonathan Budd’s blog has a page rank of 3. Also your site is similar to Katie’s and her blog has a PR of 5!

@Chuck, I think the more blogs you visit the more it will stand out to you which ones you want to hang around on and which you want to bolt from. I believe that it’s more about being attractive on the inside and passionately sharing content with your viewers as opposed to what you look like on the outside.

The Google page ranks do play a role in how easy it is for you to rank for certain keywords which makes it very nice! I’m happy to have a current ranking of 4 since I’ve only been blogging since last August and I hope to achieve a 5 in the not-so-far-off future!

    Take care!

Steve Pavlina has a blog that is a huge success. Last I heard was that he was making around $30,000 monthly from it. It has a forum now. I go to the forum on it all the time but never go to the blog on it. Sometimes the forum has over 200 people on it at one time. His blog posts are about juice diets, raw foods and being polyamorous that means loving more than one person like Tiger Woods did. His wife is a psychic and has her blog there also.

The Rose Goddess blog is very attractive to me since she promotes raw foods. She has videos of her going out in the woods in Texas and picking wild growing greens to eat.

Dandelions are weeds that grow like crazy around here– Philadelphia. So from watching the videos on that blog I went out and picked some dandelions from the yard across the street. They are herbs that have all these crazy benefits like being great for the liver. So I like her content and I think that she looks adorable maybe due to her raw food diet.

Katie has on her blog that page about promoting yourself that I think is ingenius. Maybe I should create a blog around that. I would get all those automatic emails after following people on Twitter (I opted out). They were annoying. But the one that I got from Katie said to come to her site and promote yourself. I liked that one. I think that if someone were shopping for a business opportunity, they could go to that page and read the posts.

All those comments (400) (posts) on it of people promoting themselves creates a huge amount of unique content that search engines love. A video can be great but the search engines cannot search it for words. You do know a great deal about blogging that I have not learned yet.

A good first impression on the blog is important and Katie does not have an article about that. Like I said my first impression of Katie was that she wants me to come to her site and promote myself and on that page she says that spamming rules do not apply. How come that page is not filled with spammers promoting Viagra and erectile dysfunction products?
.-= Chuck Bluestein´s last blog ..Senator Arlen Specter =-.

    Amanda Reply:

@Chuck, thanks for your extensive input!

The reason Katie can keep her page “spam-free” is because she still has a spam-catching widget on her blog as do most of us. She just allows actual people to “spam” their companies and services on that page, not let actual spammers take over.

Great question though! I could see how that would be very confusing! :)

Great post Amanda! I find this topic funny because i was just talking about this before i decided to visit your blog. This is not my first time visiting your blog…..and the main reason why i re-visit time and time again…….is because you have one of the “key ingredients” That matters most to me as a visitor, which most people don’t have.

That key ingredient is “easy access to your content.” I don’t know how many times i come across a wonderful person who has left a great comment on someone’s blog……and i click on their blog link and view nice content……but when i re-visit their “home page” i have to search all over to find their latest content or previous post…which is not listed.

Visitors exit blogs right away…..when they receive “the run around.” Their main focus is checking to see what your up to and building a relationship with you that could benefit both parties in more ways than one.

I will be back to visit your blog…..time and time again and will be sure to share this with my friends.

    Amanda Reply:

@Antoine, that’s a great point you bring up and something that turns me away from a blog as well… not being able to find content easily.

It’s so important to keep blogs clean and not filled with advertisements everywhere. The average reader doesn’t want to put up with over-use of advertisements unless it’s an established blogger and they are willing to pay the price to see what the person has to say.

I appreciate your time and feedback!

Very valuable tips, Amanda. I think the video tied with your opt-in really shows your personality. I have to get into creating videos. That’s the one I’m lacking in my blog. Thanks for sharing!

  8. Bailey Ing May 26, 2010 at 6:53 pm #

    Hey Amanda,

I really enjoyed watching your video. I especially found your concept of having the right mix of professionalism and personality so spot on! I’ve come across so many blogs that seem so pro, but so bland at the same time, it doensn’t call me to go back.

I’m quite new to blogging, so I am definitely taking your tips on.

I think as a reader, I’d also add that making a blog with lesser clutter and clean lines does make a big difference. Seen so many blogs that have so much going on, with 50 advertisements flashing around it makes it hard to concentrate.

This is my first time I read your blog, and I’m sure will be back for more of your great info. Thanks Amanda.

@Bailey, yes I couldn’t agree with you more about the clean lines and limited advertising. ESPECIALLY if your a new blogger just getting up and going, I would definitely suggest NOT putting advertisements all over your blog.

Glad you are enjoying mine and I appreciate you stopping by!

  10. Spunky Jones May 27, 2010 at 5:53 pm #

What are your thoughts on sites that name brand a character? My site is Spunky Jones SEO Blog and it is a character, therefore I am working on a image for him.

I am also thinking that I would put my picture in the about page as the person behind Spunky Jones.

I have another site at which is my web directory and it is based on a character called “MadMouse.” So far, that is working for me. However, it is much more professional site than SJ.

I picked up on a few cool ideas from your video. Thanks..

    Amanda Reply:

@Spunky Jones, I don’t think there is a problem with creating a character for your blog. I do like the idea of having your real picture in the about section.

I would just make sure that whatever persona you plan to brand yourself as stays the same across the social media networks.

    Glad you enjoyed the video!

Thanks for telling me about the spam catching widget. Many do not know about it since they stopped taking comments since they were getting too much spam.

    Hi Amanda,

I’m in the process of setting up my new website/blog. After visiting your site earlier this week, I scrapped my blog and am building my blog. I’m having a photographer do my photos next week, so I don’t have a pic on there yet. Your information has been a huge help to me. Can your recommend a WordPress theme that will allow me to customize my header?

Great Video! Lots of wonderful information.. I too am drawn to dynamic personalities and I thought of that the other day when I was on a very informative blog, probably the most info I’ve ever seen on a blog about Internet Marketing and while I was halfway through her video.. I seriously couldn’t concentrate! She was so boring and I immediately left. So, you are right.. great content AND Great personality!!!

You have both I might add.. : )
